Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande has left an indelible mark on the canvas of Hindustani Classical Music. His approach to the various genres such as, khayal, thumri, dadra, natyasangeet and bhavgeet have had amazing layers, thanks to his unique style. Having been greatly inspired by his style, in this production, Pushkar has attempted to give expression to Vasantraoji’s ‘gayaki’, as understood by him. Saguna – Nirguna

A blend of the ‘form’ and the ‘formless’ makes this production a one of its kind. Saguna, refers to the visual and cognitive, while Nirguna extols the intangible and ethereal. While both may seem different, they are actually aspects of the One Ultimate Reality, The Divine Reality. In this concept, Nirguna is the source of music, while Saguna is the divine rejoice depicted through the dance. ’Saguna - Nirguna’ explores these universal aspects of the divinity, both, within us and around us.

Hindustani Classical Music and the Bharatanatyam dance form pay tribute to the parallel concepts and analogies in music and dance, similar to the ‘Saguna-Nirguna’ concept of the Bhakti philosophy. This is beautifully portrayed through the formless ‘Raga’ (Nirguna) manifesting into a form, viz, the Saguna ‘Bandish’, just as the ‘Saguna’ aspect of ‘Abhinaya’ breathes life into the ‘Nirguna’ line- forms of Nritta (pure dance).

.

A collaborative effort between Pushkar and Arundhati Patwardhan and Juee Deogaokar (both, senior disciples of Dr. Sucheta Bhide-Chapekar), this production has yet another visual aspect to it, in the form of beautiful paintings by Udayraj Gadnis, a popular Indian spiritual artiste. His paintings on ‘Saguna-Nirguna’ are projected onto a screen, as the script bound programme proceeds seamlessly. An exploration of the physical and metaphysical through a unique blend of music, dance, paintings and literature, makes ‘Saguna-Nirguna’ a distinctive and aesthetic production.

Pravahee

Evolution is a phenomenon not restricted only to mankind. The artforms too have evolved from time immemorial. Originating from the Samveda, to its present 'fusion' avataar, Hindustani Classical Music has seen many changes in its form, texture and content.

Similarly, from the Kathakas of the 14th century to the court dancers in the Mughal era, to the intra-cultural dance extravaganzas of the 21st century, Kathak has adapted itself to the changing times.

This change witnessed by the artforms is akin to a small stream of water trickling down, joining other streams to become a river, and continuously flowing, welcoming in its fold other water bodies. 'Pravahee' is that inspired flow, taking in new influences that change its look at every turn. It is not just replicating and reproducing what has been taught by the Guru, but contributing with one’s imagination and vision; yet keeping the core values and basic framework intact.

A coming together of Kathak and Hindustani vocal music, 'Pravahee', is a collaborative effort between India’s renowned Kathak danceuse Shambhavi Dandekar (daughter-disciple of Guru Maneesha Sathe) and Pushkar Lele.

A homogeneous blend of a wide repertoire of Hindustani Classical Music (Prabandha gaayan, Dhrupad, Khayal, Chatarang, Lokgeet, Thumri, Tappa, Natya Sangeet and Gazal), and the repertoire of Kathak consisting of Taal presentation, Hori, Gat-bhav and Tarana, 'Pravahee' explores the journey of both artforms. Presented as a combination of both - solo performances and a 'jugalbandi', 'Pravahee' is a treat for connoisseurs of music and dance.

Having regaled audiences in Australia and Singapore, 'Pravahee' received a phenomenal response even at the prestigious Canberra National Multicultural Festival.

Kumar Gandharva Darshan

Pandit Kumar Gandharva was undoubtedly an iconoclastic musician who broke free from the shackles of gharanas, and developed a style of his own. Triveni-Rang

A platform celebrating 'nature', 'visual art' and 'music', 'Triveni-Rang' is a collaboration between Milind Mulick and Pushkar Lele.

The myriad moods, patterns and combinations of musical notes ignite a variety of shades, textures and contours in a visual artist's mind. “Apart from the lyrics of a song, it’s sheer musicality is capable of evoking strong emotions in a sensitive artiste’s mind, which then easily and effortlessly flow in his artworks”, says eminent watercolours artiste Milind Mulick.

Similarly, nature and visual art have always been stimuli for musical creation. A musician depicts his deep feelings by drawing, sketching, and painting on his musical canvas. Each musical phrase is like a painter’s brush stroke. “A perfectly tuned tanpura is my canvas, on which I paint, as I sing”, says Pushkar.

'Triveni-Rang' has Pushkar sing nine select bhajan-s of Sant Kabir, Soordaas and Meera bai as Milind reacts to his live music with a splash of colours on his canvas.
